Face ID disappears after a display replacement for one reason: the front sensor module was removed or damaged together with the old screen. The Face ID module itself is bonded to the logic board at the factory — you cannot install it from another phone, this is not the technician's carelessness, but Apple's security measure.
Three different consequences that look the same
- Face ID won't set up at all ("Unable to activate Face ID") — usually the flex cable from the dot projector is damaged or was not transferred.
- Face ID works, but automatic brightness adjustment and True Tone are gone — the microchip from the original display was not transferred.
- Warning "Unable to verify that this iPhone has a genuine Apple display" — on iPhone 11 and newer it appears even after installing a genuine screen if the binding has not been done. Face ID itself usually works in this case.
Why this happens
The front sensor module is held by a thin flex cable and lies in the upper part of the display. It must be carefully peeled off from the old screen and transferred to the new one — a quick operation, but the flex cable tears from careless movement, and the sensors themselves fear heat. That's why Face ID most often "goes missing" not in a service center, but after self-repair or cheap repair where the screen is replaced as a complete assembly with foreign sensors.
What can be fixed and what cannot
A torn flex cable and a misaligned projector can be repaired — the module is restored or transferred from the old display if it is intact. True Tone and display binding are restored by a programmer. But if the Face ID module itself burned out or was replaced with a foreign one, there's nothing to be done: the sensor-board pair cannot be separated, and no service center in the world can work around this. So the main rule is simple: do not throw away the old display from the service center until the new one is completely verified.
What to do now
If Face ID disappears after replacement, go back to where you had it replaced while the old screen is still not lost. If that's not possible — bring your phone in for diagnostic mode together with the old display if you still have it. We check the flex cable, sensors, and binding; you can book any day, and it may take from an hour.
