Screen glass replacement is a repair where the matrix and sensor remain original, and only the top layer is replaced. It's cheaper than replacing the display assembly and preserves the original image, but it requires equipment: heating, wire, laminator, and a dust-free environment. The latter is what distinguishes a proper workshop from "20-minute repair on the knee."
How it works
- Heating and disassembly. The module is removed from the housing, flex cables are disconnected. Already here you can see if the matrix is intact: if the image before repair had cracks, stripes, or black spots, just glass won't help.
- Cutting old glass. A wire passes between the glass and polarizer. This is the riskiest step: the matrix underneath is thinner than paper.
- Cleaning adhesive. OCA residue is removed with solvent and melamine sponge — mechanically, without heating the matrix.
- Gluing and laminating. New glass is placed on an adhesive layer and pressed in a laminator, then in an autoclave under pressure — so no micro-bubbles remain.
- Testing. Touch response across the entire area, colors, brightness, sensors. Only then the module goes back into the housing.
Why dust decides everything
There is no air gap between the glass and matrix — they are glued together. A dust particle that gets on the adhesive stays there forever and is visible as a black dot on a light background. It can only be removed by cutting the glass again, meaning redoing the entire repair. That's why gluing is done in a room with filtered air, not at a desk.
When glass replacement is impossible
- Matrix is damaged — stripes, burn-in, black spots, "spilled ink." Glass is useless here, you need a new assembly.
- Sensor doesn't read touch in part of the screen: in most models the sensor is glued into the matrix, not the glass.
- Display is bent after a hard impact — it's impossible to glue glass evenly on an uneven surface.

Screen glass replacement costs less than a complete display assembly — the difference is greater the more expensive the model. And it's the same repair after which iPhone won't show a message about non-genuine parts: the matrix stayed yours.
